Ticks, Children, and Watermelon Soap

My husband and I had the blessing of two families from New York state stay with us this past weekend.  Our house is small, but the property is big with plenty of room for children to explore. The children had a ball finding unique rocks in the driveway and toads in the woodpile. The highlight of Friday was catching fireflies and sipping hot tea on the porch in the cool of the evening.

The fun continued Saturday evening as the children enjoyed bathing with Watermelon Taffy soap.  Living in Lyme Disease tick country we are very paranoid diligent to check for ticks.  Bath time is a good time for this! Sally, the mother of one-year-old Benjamin, found a tick on his hip.  After promptly removing that tick, she continued to check him for more ticks.  One lift of his arm revealed two dreaded dark things in his armpit!  These were more plump than the tick she had just removed from his hip.  Horror!   We braced ourselves for an ordeal with removing ticks from the armpit of an one year old.  However, when Sally attempted to grab the "tick" with the tweezers, it rolled away.  We looked at each other, puzzled...ticks don't roll! Then we realized that those two small black plump things were not ticks at all, but rather, they were the poppy seeds from the Watermelon Taffy soap!!!

My aunt has called the Watermelon Taffy soap ... "Laffy Taffy" since the day I made it. I think she may be right because we sure had a good laugh Saturday night about it! Just remember folks, when you use your "Laughy-Taffy" soap, the poppy seeds are NOT ticks!

On a more serious note:  Knowing the devastating effects of Lyme Disease personally, I urge you to be diligent to check yourself and your loved ones for ticks even if you have used tick spray.  An ounce of prevention is definitely worth a pound of cure!

Name that Soap! (with update)

Here is a handmade goat milk soap I crafted yesterday. This one is geared toward the John Deere tractor fan.  The fragrance is described as fresh rain mingled with lily of the valley, jasmine, leafy greens, pine and musk.   It brings back memories of spring rains and trying to get the fields plowed years ago when my husband was a cotton farmer in Louisiana.

The only name I can come up with for this soap is "Tractor Soap".  If any of you creative minds have another idea for the name, leave me a comment below or contact me using the contact form on the right.  Thanks!

Watermelon Taffy Debut

Watermelon Taffy Handmade Goat Milk Soap is making its debut in my soap shop today!  This is the first soap I've made using poppy seeds.  Their purpose is two-fold. They represent watermelon seeds, but they also act as an exfoliate.  This is definitely a fun soap!

The Tale of Two Sisters Soap

Green Apple Handmade Goat Milk Soap

The Tale of Two Sisters Soap

A few weeks ago, my Aunt Barbara asked if I could make some Green Apple soap. Barbara is my Mama's youngest sister. Mama was 16 years old when Barbara was born.  Barbara came to live with us when she was just a young girl.  So she is more like a sister to me.

Barbara said that Mama would buy Green Apple body oil for her in the 70's, and that she would love to have some "happy flashbacks" of childhood if I could make some green apple scented soap. So, I set out on a mission to find a green apple fragrance oil that behaves well in cold process goat milk soap. I found one, ordered it, and received it last week.  Oh, my! Talk about smelling DELICIOUSSIPPI!!! We decided to go with green, orange and white for the colours.  Green is my aunt's favourite colour, and anybody who knew my Mama (aka da Granny/Granny Gumbo) more than likely knows her favourite colour was orange.

This soap behaved beautifully during the whole process.  Since this was my first time to do the chopstick swirl, I could hardly sleep that night because I was so eager to unmold and cut the loaf to see what the design would look like!  Here are the results:

I sent this photo to Barbara.  She is VERY happy with it and can hardly wait to smell it.  She claims that she's not sharing this soap with anyone!  So, it remains to be seen if this one will be available in my soap shop next month.
